Goldberg's Dec. 1, 2022 space memorabilia auction is now online. This is the first day of the Winter Collectables sale. The space portion begins with lot 150.

This sale has some truly unique items:

  • A very rare Apollo 1 photo of both the prime and backup crews – autographed by all six crew members (lot 187).

  • A Mercury 7 autographed group photo, a Mercury 4 flown dime from the family of Gus Grissom, a rare Gemini space suit tether hook, a Gemini 3 flown "Molly Brown" sterling silver Fliteline medallion from the Grissom family, a flown flag carried by Ed White on Gemini IV.

  • An unusual item — all space suit gloves were made based on hand molds of the individual astronauts – lot 179 is one of the molds.

  • Four pieces of Apollo 11 Kapton is offered (not often available).

  • There are several consignments from the family of Dick Underwood.

  • A framed Apollo 15 lunar surface flown flag is offered in lot 215. This flag was given by David Scott to his wife Anne Lurton Scott and is nicely presented with a family photo and another photo of Scott saluting the flag with the LM in the background.
There are plenty more items, something for everyone. Please check out the sale.

Looks like some nice pieces.

My understanding is that Gemini V featured the first flown patch design. Does anyone have insight into the design featured in Lots 166 and 167 that are described as flown?

Lot 166 is a Fliteline medallion and it is generally understood that all Fliteline medallions flew. The Gemini 3 and Gemini 4 crews did not design the Fliteline medallions and did not consider their artwork to be their patch at the time of the mission.

The design on the Gemini 3 Fliteline medallion was later adapted by John Young and Gus Grissom as a patch, but only after the mission. No examples of the patch are known to have flown on Gemini 3 (or existed at the time to do so).

The patch being offered (Lot 167) does appear to be on the originals produced for the crew, though.

Unless the second COA regarding the Apollo 15 flown flag (dated 2002) presented to Dave Scott's wife Lurton specifically states that it was flown to the surface... I'd be skeptical. "Flown to the moon" usually suggests orbit only. Goldberg should post an image of the second COA.

Rick, you can see the second US flag COA at the 2013 Heritage auction where Steve Belasco's estate sold it after his death. Goldberg auction lot is mistaken as it is lunar orbit.

The flag was sold by Lurton Scott in 2001 Fall auction at Aurora Gallery. The second COA is one that is on Aurora stationary with the Aurora hallmark of draped curtains printed on it.

You can see the wrinkles on the flag in the 2001 auction, in the 2013 auction and on the current display. That and other markings prove it is the same flag.

What about the Ed White Gemini flown flag? I took a look at the Superior 1996 catalog item but it's hard to tell if it's the same.
