The description for lot 200 implies that the image in the Space Shots card shows the same jacket being offered in the auction. That can’t be the case since the image on the card is the actual one flown on Apollo 9 while the one in the auction was used only for training.

While the jacket is clearly labelled as being used in training, the auction description "...and a Space Shot Card showing the jacket being worn is also signed." should really read "...and a SIGNED Space Shot card showing the TYPE of jacket being worn."

I witnessed Rusty sign this jacket at his final Astronaut Scholarship Foundation show, and now wish I'd grabbed it at the time, alas.

The Apollo 9 flight jacket referred to in the above post, from my original collection in which Chuck had later acquired it, was properly described by Chuck in this upcoming auction by The American Space Museum.

It was explained that this same jacket in auction was likely "used in training" at some point by LMP Schweickart and that the space card photo of the Apollo 9 crew with their post-splashdown jackets on was not the same auction jacket, but a similar unflown used or backup type.

In some cases that I have heard, though, even the same inflight garments worn by the crew on the recovery ship after splashdown seen in photos may not in fact had been flown.

The Apollo 9 crew may had been issued new pairs of white Beta trousers and jackets once they were either inside the command module awaiting their ocean pickup or possibly while inside their helicopter when flying from the spacecraft to the aircraft carrier.

Ok Ken - but if that was the case, the jacket offered here in the auction would have the Apollo 9 Beta Cloth patch affixed to it, and I don't see any evidence it was ever there, i.e. stitch holes, etc...

Even in early training, I don't always recall Apollo crewmen wearing the Beta flight suits that had their flight crew Beta patch affixed to them. I do have some photos, I believe of the Apollo 8 crew, wearing the same-type garments near Pad 39A, but not with their flight crew Beta patches anywhere in sight, and I believe with another flight crew as well.

Some assigned crew members could have worked in other areas of training
that required using the same garments months in advance, and in some instances, not necessarily on the same Apollo mission they had been assigned to.

All said, though, Schweickart's name was included on the jacket, but there is also a possibility that he may have never used that same jacket. That's why it's not 100% confirmed that it was used in training, but nevertheless, I still think its a fine Apollo-era Beta jacket.

Got it — I am not disputing it was ever used in training, I was questioning the likelihood that it is the one being worn aboard the recovery ship as you alluded to. Thank you.

You're welcome and no problem whatsoever as I'm glad we were able to clear up those differences.
