Abell Auction Company release
Estate of NASA Administrator to Hit Auction Block

Abell Auction Company will conduct a fine art, antiques, 20th century design, jewelry, and vehicle auction on Sunday, October 6th, 2019.

Live bidding begins at 10 a.m. PST online and at the gallery. The sale features property from prominent Southern California estates.

Abell Auction Co. is honored to represent the estate of Dr. Thomas O. Paine, who oversaw the nation's space program during the first manned missions to the moon. Dr. Paine joined the space agency as its Deputy Administrator in January 1968 and was named the third Administrator in its history in March 1969. During his tenure, NASA launched the first seven Apollo missions, in which 20 astronauts orbited the earth, 14 flew to the moon and 4 walked on its surface. The Paine estate includes an array of NASA memorabilia, a collection of Asian art and California landscapes.

Looks like Mr. Paine either didn't collect much Apollo items or already sold them/gave them away. I would have imagined a "trove."

Thomas Paine died in 1992. His collective papers were donated to the Library of Congress and comprise 64,000 items in 183 containers.
Correspondence, memoranda, reports, minutes of meetings, appointment books, family and genealogical papers, and printed matter chiefly relating to Paine's engineering career with General Electric Company and Northrop Corporation and as deputy and acting administrator at NASA, where he directed seven Apollo missions, including the first to the moon.
These lots are either just the beginning of what will be offered or what is left among Paine's estate 27 years after his death. Perhaps these were the items held by one family member.
