The May "Hollywood" RR Auction sale has some amazing items that relate to science fiction and space, especially in the script, movie poster, and prop categories. (Some amazing Iron Man props, too.) But one of the neatest for this forum is the original, film crew member script for Apollo 13. Has a lot of on-set drawings within the script, some candid photos on set, and the script is signed and inscribed by Lovell. One of the cooler original scripts I've seen. Will be fun to watch this one. Also interesting to note that there are two original "Marooned" scripts in the auction as well: one of the early drafts, and then the final production shooting script. The Hollywood version of a lost crew mission well before the actual Apollo 13 mission. |

As an FYI, among movie collectors, such a script doesn't hold much value. Countless copies of scripts are printed during the life of a movie production, and then many photocopies made from those, especially once revisions are made. You'd be paying mostly for the signature and any additional stuff inserted into it. |

For reproduced and copy scripts, yes. For actual productions scrips for more popular movies (with the actors notes, revision pages added, early drafts, etc.), the values often go to the high four figures. (Sometimes 5.) Copies and for less popular movies - sure, dime a dozen. Production used and issued scripts (even unsigned) for classic productions of popular movies like Planet of the Apes (original), or Lord of the Rings, are very expensive. Just spend some time with serious hobbyist dealers in that field like Walter Reuben (see some of the vintage production scripts he has for sale, for price comps https://www.walterfilm.com/product-category/movie-scripts-rare-books/) and some of the others. The prices will amaze you. And compared to original scripts also sold at serious auction houses -- those are good market rates. The A13 and Marooned scripts are such scripts. As for more common movie (and even TV scripts), you are looking often at between $200 and $500 for original production made (and not white paper copy) for some popular shows and movies. And these are without being signed. Just search past Heritage auction results for scripts. Repop, of course, just the value of the autographs. Of course, the crazy prices are reserved for the Casablanca's of the world. Nonetheless, there is still strong demand for select scripts, and certainly worth more than just the autographs on the cover. (Of course, the autographs themselves are not to be discounted, as just getting some of those are also very rare and expensive depending on the cast, show or movie.) |

Pretty cool to see the bidding start to heat up at RR for some of the space-related movie items in the auction. For those of you who like films as much as I do, it is worth a look at the props, movie scripts, and — heck, who can't pass up the Disney and Western material? And most of the scripts are not the white-copy paper copies you see on eBay, but rather production issued and used scripts. Many of them with the "rainbow" pages from edits/revisions, and many with actor notes and revisions in them (the Red Foxx and Valerie Harper ones come to mind). Some of my favorite interesting items to watch: And many more. I love to watch and see how "cross-over" material with a space theme performs in these auctions. | |
