The uploading of the Lunar Legacies 18 auction to Invaluable/Auction Zip has been completed, and it is ready for viewing and pre-bidding (you must register at Invaluable to bid). Just go to Invaluable and hit the "Auctioneer Directory" link and find Lunar Legacies, or click here.

There are some descriptions left for me to write and all should be completed by Tuesday (Nov. 3), but the bidding numbers are correct and you may pre-bid now if you so choose once you are registered.

I do accept mail-in bids so if you cannot be there live for the auction, please email with your list, and I will be glad to bid for you. Please also understand that all mail bids must be confirmed received by me.

Highlights in this auction include:

  • Large group of Lunar Roving Vehicle manuals and working papers.
  • Apollo 15 MCC working papers from flight controller.
  • Apollo 13 Lunar Module Lunar Surface Checklist
  • Apollo 11 Apollo Operations Handbook, Volumes 1 & 2
  • Edgar Mitchell items including flown to the moon and lunar surface items
  • Walter Cunningham items including flight gear.
  • Jack Lousma items including Skylab and STS-3 training manuals.
  • Items from Paul Weitz and Yury Usachev.
  • Jerry Ross' Mach 25 patch.
  • An ALT flight crew flight suit with rare ALT patch.
  • STS-135 flown US flag and patch
  • Several STS-107 Columbia crew-signed items
I will be sending out updates as the auction nears, but please email me with any questions you may have. Thanks!

I have a couple of items in this auction that are awesome.

The auction format doesn't allow many photos, and photos are about the only way to describe a mission "workbook" for Apollo 15, so I have loaded over 100 photos of this 500-page book in an album, here

Please let me know if there are any questions about this book. Here's the link to the auction lot.

The second item I wanted to highlight is a set of five maps/charts comprised of LOR photos, and each is a zone of opportunity for Apollo 11. The auction format evidently doesn't allow for a description over X words, and I have info from Michael Marcus that is great additional info about these maps:
Set of five Lunar Orbiter photo/maps indicating the final five chosen potential landing sites for Mission I Apollo Zone of Interest (Apollo 11).

From the collection of an Apollo-era flight controller and geological engineer who worked on surface operations planning and the development of the LRV (see other lots for more material that belonged to this engineer).

  1. These Lunar Orbiter photo/"maps" (labeled Sites 1 through 5) indicate the final five chosen potential landing sites for Mission I Apollo Zone of Interest (Apollo 11). They were simply labeled as Site 1, Site 2, Site 3 and so on. These site label numbers progress from east to west across the face of the moon in terms of the E-W location of these five potential landing sites. Please see the jpeg image depicting the final Mission I Apollo Zone of Interest map.

  2. I also note that the angles for the approach and landing ellipses are not consistent with the July launch of Apollo 11. Instead, they seem be consistent with a launch date a bit later in the year.
The first piece, labeled as Site 1, is a LO mosaic for landing site II P-2. Here is what is interesting about this photo. It is mislabeled in terms of the Lunar Orbiter mission source photo. Look along the left edge, and you will see that it is correctly labeled as landing site "II P-2," but is mislabeled as "M-39 L III" or photo number 39 from LO3. The actual lunar orbiter mission was LO2, not LO3. See here.

So what we have here is a photo which is mislabeled in terms of the Lunar Orbiter mission photo source. This makes this item fairly unique since it was rare for either NASA or the US Army Corps of Engineers to make such an obvious mistake.

The second piece, labeled as Site 2, is a LO mosaic for landing site II P-6. This is Apollo 11's landing site. This photo is correctly labeled along the left edges of the photo as site II P-6 and photo number 77 from LO2. See here.

The third piece, labeled Site 3, is a LO mosaic for Mission I Apollo Zone of Interest landing site "II P-8." The left side of this photo correctly indicates that it is photo number 113 taken by LO2. See here.

The fourth piece, labeled Site 4, is a LO mosaic for Mission I Apollo Zone of Interest landing site "II P-11." This photograph is correctly labeled that this photo number 177 from LO3. See here.

The fifth piece, labeled Site 5, is a LO mosaic for Mission I Apollo Zone of Interest landing site "II P-13." This photograph is correctly labeled that this photo number 200 from LO2. See here.

And here's the link to auction lot.

There are other items from this engineer's personal collection also in this auction, including many lots of LRV materials.

Regarding the mission "workbook" for Apollo 15, what a great piece - wish I had seen it properly before the hammer fell.

I love the map book — are unflown copies easy to come by?

On a second question: I managed to acquire Lot 351 which is the engineering notes and memos for the Apollo 16 UV Camera, I have the engineer down as Cooper — can you please provide any further info on him and what his role was.

I am just waking up to the fact that unflown and training used material has just as interesting a story to tell as flown material. Thanks.

I was the winning bidder on a couple of great flown items. The National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) convention was last week, and I attended. Fortunately, for me, it was held in Las Vegas this year. When I was there I made contact with Donnis, not only did he bring my winning items to the hotel I was staying, he and his wife took me out to a show "Motown" that was at the hotel.

Now that is customer service!!! Thanks again for a great auction and the show!!

All times are CT (US)
