Private spaceflight training group Waypoint 2 Space is crowdfunding the construction of its planned Modular EVA Training System (METS) for training both government and civilian astronauts. METS, or the Modular EVA Training System, is a fully enclosed black chamber that houses a 12 foot high by 10 foot wide Spacecraft Training Module. With Star Field generators above and below, METS allows astronaut trainees to simulate an Extra-Vehicular Activity (EVA), commonly known as a spacewalk.METS creates the sensation of weightlessness while the astronaut trainee moves around the space module - simulating space walk repairs performed by astronauts at the International Space Station. |

Interesting stuff. Space.com reports that Waypoint 2 Space has chosen private spacesuit company Final Frontier Design to integrate spacesuit design ideas with the METS simulator. "Our experts looked at several excellent space suit designs along with ways to incorporate these life support systems into our core pre-suborbital program," said Kelly Soich, director of programs and chief payload specialist for Waypoint, in a press release. "In the end, FFD [Final Frontier Design] presented an innovative solution, embodying the core efforts of commercial space and providing us the capability to maximize spaceflight training for a large segment of the population." | |
