Anybody know of good sources of info on the USAF's PRIME lifting body program? They launched three vehicles atop Atlas ICBMs in the mid-1960s to determine their hypersonic flight characteristics. I have some info from books, but I'd like to find primary sources and don't know where to look.

Dwayne,

You may already be familiar with this NASA publication, but just in case ... The first chapter gives a nice overview of this subject, and the bibliography cites several primary sources.

Thanks. I found several good references in Jenkins' shuttle book, including what looks like an internal USAF history of the program. Now I simply need to find those documents.

As for images, yes, if you have anything, I'd appreciate it. I located a number of really nice images of the vehicle (about 10 of them), but have not acquired them yet.

Joel Powell and myself did a very nice article (if I say so myself) on ASSET and PRIME in the Journal of the British Interplanetary Society, vol.36, pp.369-376, 1983.

I have some interesting photos as well.

Dwayne,

I assume you checked the last chapter of Hallion's "Hypersonic Revolution" Vol. I? Obviously it's not access to the actual documents, but has good sources. For that matter, have you talked to Dick himself? I'd think he'd know where to get stuff, if he doesn't have it.

Cheers,

Kevin
