Did the Soviet program have an Apollo-type Lunar Landing Research Vehicle (LLRV)? Any info/pictures would be greatly appreciated. |

The Soviet cosmonauts training for the lunar landings used a specially equipped Mi-9 helicopter. According to the late Alexei Leonov, one of the would-be lunar landings crew member, he personally "made nine very difficult landings in that helicopter with the engines cut."This looks like a rather wild method. The reason is the Soviet manned lunar program was always under-financed and therefore the designers had to be sometimes very inventive to find some simple and not very expensive solutions. |

Regarding the photograph — the only one I have ever seen is showing Alexei Leonov in front of this special equipped helicopter. It can be found on page 685 of Asif Siddiqi's "The Soviet Space Race With Apollo" published by the University Press of Florida in 2003. |

Found another picture and more info in Google books p. 684 within “Challenge to Apollo” The Soviet Union and the Space Race, 1945-1974, by Asiff Siddiqi NASA SP 2000-4408. |

The University of Florida publication is the reprint of the original NASA SP, however, NASA SP is in one volume and the reprint is in two volumes. This work is the best account of the Soviet manned lunar program history I ever read. |

Thank you. Do you have any idea how to get the Florida edition, contact the university directly? |
