Historian and space policy analyst Dwayne Day writes for The Space Review about the CIA's recent release of thousands of previously classified "President's Daily Brief" newsletters from the Kennedy and Johnson administrations and the references they contain to the Soviet efforts to challenge Apollo.
The Soviets never publicly discussed their large lunar rocket and thus only classified information about it existed until the end of the Cold War. What the newly-released President’s Daily Briefs demonstrate is that this information reached the President of the United States, providing him a running commentary on the progress of the race to the Moon.

It's impressive how much they were able to derive from the PHOTINT. Regarding the N-1, I recently wrote this article on the N-1/L3 programme.

Yes, his work on the N-1 is amazing. I'm extremely fortunate that he allowed me to use some of it. There is a link at the foot of the article to the N-1 book he worked on.
