BAIKONUR, Kazakhstan (AP) -- The presidents of Russia and Kazakhstan celebrated the 50th anniversary Thursday of the Baikonur cosmodrome -- a sprawling and well-worn gateway to the heavens that launched Sputnik and the first cosmonaut, as well as current missions to the international space station.

"America's challenge of today has forged man's destiny of tomorrow." - Commander Eugene Cernan, Apollo 17 Mission, 11 December 1972

Russia issued a set of four stamps a few months ago to note this anniversary. See Capsule Comments (1) in the "Stamps & Covers" section for the link to these stamps.
