A new space experiment is taking the baking tip "let your bread rise" to the extreme.
Slated to launch to the International Space Station in 2018, "Bake In Space" will test a specially-devised dough with a microgravity oven to bake bread in orbit for the first time in history.
"Baking where nobody baked before," the team behind the Bake In Space experiment quipped. "Bake In Space seeks to address the scientific and technical challenges relating to the production of fresh bread in space."

The New Scientist article states inaccurately that no bread was flown after the corned beef sandwich escapade on Gemini 3. Bread slices were in fact flown on at least some Apollo missions - Buzz Aldrin gave a demo on Apollo 11 of how to put ham spread on a slice of bread in microgravity.
155:44:57 Aldrin: These bite-sized objects were designed to remove the problem of having so many crumbs floating around in the cabin, so they designed a particular size that would be able to go into the mouth all at once. I think since all of our experience, we've discovered that we can progress a good bit further than that back to some of the type meals that we have on Earth. As a matter of fact, on this flight we've carried along pieces of bread, and along with the bread we have a ham spread.

I would bet that astronauts on a long duration flight will like the smell of fresh baked bread. Give then a little smell of home.
