Astronauts to brew coffee on space station with ISSpresso machine

The International Space Station is getting a critical upgrade: its first coffee machine.

The "ISSpresso," a capsule-based espresso machine, will enable astronauts to brew the hot caffeinated beverage as an alternative to the instant coffee that has been their only option aboard the space station for the past 13 years.

"We have been thinking about taking espresso into space for some time," said Giuseppe Lavazza, vice president of the coffee retailer Lavazza, in a statement. "Today we are in a position to overcome the limits of weightlessness and enjoy a good espresso – the indisputable symbol of made in Italy products – on the International Space Station."

Does this open up an opportunity for a certain Seattleite executive to float the idea of sending the aptly named Starbucks into space?

It would interesting to see if they can use the Don Pettit "Microgravity Cup" to enjoy their coffee!

An advanced, hard-plastic version of Don Pettit's zero-g coffee cup has accompanied the ISSpresso to the space station as part of the Capiliary Beverage experiment.
Even mundane tasks like taking a drink are complicated in space, where microgravity affects the way fluids behave. Crew members must drink from special sealed bags instead of using straws or normal cups. Capillary Effects of Drinking in the Microgravity Environment (Capillary Beverage) studies the process of drinking from specially designed Space Cups that use fluid dynamics to mimic the effect of gravity.

This morning's (April 17) capture and berthing of SpaceX's CRS-6 Dragon at the International Space Station inspired a bit of "Star Trek: Voyager" humor from flight engineer and robotic arm controller Samantha Cristoforetti, given the spacecraft's inclusion of the ISSpresso onboard.
"There's coffee in that nebula"... ehm, I mean... in that #Dragon.

To boldly brew: Astronaut uses ISSpresso to make first cup of coffee in space

Space: the final frontier — for coffee.

Italian astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti, dressed in a "Star Trek" captain's uniform, became the first person in space to sip from a freshly-made cup of coffee on Sunday (May 3), using the International Space Station's newly-installed espresso machine.

"Coffee: the finest organic suspension ever devised," the European Space Agency astronaut wrote on Twitter, citing Kathryn Janeway, the fictional starship caption from "Star Trek: Voyager." "To boldly brew..."

Her sci-fi styling aside, Cristoforetti made real-life space history. For as long as there have been crewmembers on the station, going on nearly 15 years, the astronauts and cosmonauts have craved a better cup o'joe. Until Sunday, they only had instant coffee crystals.

The ISSpresso changes that...

Does this now mean we now have a whole new category of space explorer: a baristanaut?

Having been watching Star Trek Voyager recently, I have been waiting for this quote from Janeway, but I haven't heard it yet, or maybe I missed it. What episode was it from?

"There's coffee in that nebula..." is from "The Cloud" (season 1, episode 6).

"Coffee: the finest organic suspension ever devised..." is from "Hunters" (season 4, episode 15).

OK, thanks, Robert. I am finishing Season 6 now, so I was long past it when the espresso arrived at ISS.
