I have been reading about the plans for the space shuttle and ISS prior to the shuttle Columbia being lost on STS-107. Based on what I have found online, it appears that "future" shuttle missions had been announced (with crews named) going forward a little more than a year. This included launching and landing a couple ISS expeditions. One of the last planned missions that I can find crew information for is STS-119 scheduled to launch on Jan. 15, 2004. This included launching the planned Expedition 9 crew of Padalka, Fincke and Konkonenko. I am trying to figure out what mission was planned to return them, but I can't find the information I am looking for. STS-121 (scheduled for July 1, 2004) makes the most sense. The next shuttle to visit ISS wasn't planned until October 2004. Would the Expedition 9 crew have returned on STS-121? |

When writing an article on the near-year long flight I wrote that Padalka "was due to fly to and from the space station on Space Shuttle missions STS-119 and STS-121." I will check for the source of this information and post another message shortly. |

The International Space Station: Building for the Future (2008) by John E. Catchpole has a list on page 116 showing that the original Expedition 9 crew of Padalka, Finke and Kononenko would return on STS-121. That was my main source for the information together with it fitting with the schedule of flights and my memory telling me I had seen this before, possibly at the time. Encyclopedia Astronautica gives the same information and Wikipedia's list of cancelled Space Shuttle missions also shows STS-121 as a crew rotation mission but does not name any names. I could not find confirmation in NASA's JSC press releases of a return flight but they do show launch on STS-119 (release H02-249 dated 12 December 2002). Incidentally, the Catchpole list also shows an Expedition 10 crew of Chiao, Sharipov and Phillips flying up on STS-121 and down on STS-123. | |
