Spacewalkers to relocate failed pump module

During the first Expedition 41 spacewalk, scheduled to begin around 7:10 a.m. CDT (1210 GMT) on Tuesday (Oct. 7), NASA astronaut Reid Wiseman and European Space Agency astronaut Alexander Gerst will exit out the Quest airlock for a six-and-a-half hour excursion to transfer a degraded pump module to its long-term home on the External Stowage Platform-2.

The two spacewalkers will also install the Mobile Transporter Relay Assembly (MTRA) that provides backup power options to the Mobile Transporter railcar system, which moves the Canadarm2 and Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator to worksites along the station's truss.

Pump module relocated, relay installed

Reid Wiseman and Alexander Gerst completed the first Expedition 41 spacewalk at 1:43 p.m. CDT (1843 GMT), six hours and 13 minutes after they began.

"It's a good day for NASA. It's definitely a great day for the European Space Agency," Wiseman said after reentering the station's airlock.

The duo completed relocating and stowing a failed pump module for its possible future repair and reuse, replaced a light on a camera on the outside of the station's U.S. laboratory, and installed a relay that feeds backup power to the rail system that helps reposition the station's robotic arm.

Tuesday's (Oct. 7) spacewalk was the first for both Wiseman and Gerst. It was the 182nd spacewalk in support of station assembly and maintenance.

All times are CT (US)
