Was just looking at some of the images from yesterday and I noticed on the walk out pictures that some of the astronauts have two white straps attached from the front of their collars to the front of the ring for their helmets. What exactly are those and why do only four of them have them?

The picture I'm referring to is here:

Thanks!

Those straps help keep the neck ring secure and down in front. You wouldn't want to have it bobbling up and down as you walk.

It looks like it may have something to do with keeping part of the weight of the suit at the neck region off the front of the astronaut's throat. This might come in handy during the hours spent horizontal before lift-off and during the launch phase.

Just a guess ...

Best,

The two little white straps you refer two are attached to the neck dam on the suits.

When they are not used the neck dam is fitted snugly around the neck of the astronaut, in case of a water landing this allows the astro to remove their helmet in the water but not let any water into the suit (do a search to find out about Gus Grissom's experience during MR-4 recovery when water got into his suit, albeit through a different route).

The straps are purely a personal choice as to who decides they want to use them to relieve pressure against the neck.

Adam is right.

Just a small note though: The white straps are indeed purely for comfort but only during the time the astronauts put the suit on and up until they get into the white room. At that point the straps (if used by the astronaut) are detached and the neck is sealed for the flight.
