It is with sadness I note the death of a long-time friend and leader within the space memorabilia community, Al Hallonquist (cS: albatron). A former police officer and detective with more than 30 years of public service, Al shared his passion for space history as a writer, astronaut representative, UACC (Universal Autograph Collector's Club) director and founder of the Astronauts Group on Yahoo. He led the creation of a website dedicated to the "Mercury 13" women aviators and championed the induction of several legendary pilots into the National Aviation Hall of Fame. Al joined collectSPACE in 2000, less than a year after this website was founded. He was always on the lookout to assist others, and was eager to extend his friendship to anyone in the community who was in need. Al's absence will be long felt wherever aerospace enthusiasts gather, online or off. |

That is shocking news. Al was there as I grew up on this website. I would see him at the various shows every year. Al helped everybody. He was a good man. |

Oh my gosh! I just had an email from Al not too long ago as he was going to arrange for us a test pilot luncheon once COVID was more behind us. My wife and I are in shock. Our sincere heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. He was one of the best and he'll be greatly missed. |

Oh no! The day began so well with a collective Zoom session and dozens of people wishing Francis French a Happy 50th birthday, and then I click onto collectSPACE to find this truly terrible news. Al was such a great guy, always helpful and friendly, and I will miss him more than words can say. He will be irreplaceable in such things as Spacefest. We have lost a great friend to all, and we are much the poorer for this awful news. Vale, Al Hallonquist. |

One year at The Gatherings of Eagles, Al invited a few us to his hotel room to meet with Bob Cardenas. We ended up talking for hours about the flight test programs at Edwards. Just out of the kindness of his heart and the fellowship we all brought to the event. He was a great man, and a good friend in the years since. I will truly miss him.

Very sad news.I met him in 2003 in DC at an early show, and just a few weeks ago he gave me valuable information about the X-15 program that I would have never found myself. |
