Richard Linklater has written and is directing a new animated feature for Netflix, "Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Adventure."
Set against the backdrop of the 1969 Apollo mission to the moon, the feature is inspired by Linklater's childhood in Houston, TX, and tells the story of the first moon landing in the summer of 1969 from two interwoven perspectives. "Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Adventure" will be told from both the astronaut and mission control view of the triumphant moment, and the lesser-seen bottom up perspective of what it was like from an excited kid's perspective, living near NASA but mostly watching it on TV like hundreds of millions of others.
Jack Black will star with Zachary Levi and Josh Wiggins. Milo Coy, Lee Eddy, Bill Wise, Natalie L'Amoreaux, Jessica Brynn Cohen, Sam Chipman, and Danielle Guilbot round out the cast.
The movie will be a hybrid of hand drawn and computer animated imagery, which will be completed at Minnow Mountain in Austin and Submarine in the Netherlands. The live-action shoot wrapped in March 2020 in Austin.

The world premiere of "Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Childhood" will take place on March 13, 2022 in Austin, Texas as part of this year's SXSW festival. A second screening is scheduled for March 19.
"Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Childhood" tells the story of the first moon landing in the summer of 1969 from two interwoven perspectives – the astronaut and mission control view of the triumphant moment, and through the eyes of a kid growing up in Houston, Texas who has intergalactic dreams of his own.
Taking inspiration from Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Richard Linklater’s own life, "Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Childhood" is a snapshot of American life in the 1960s that is part coming of age, part societal commentary, and part out-of-this-world adventure.

This looks great to me plus I like the fact it was shot and posted (at least the CGI) in the USA. It's hard to compete for these services compared with overseas rates. Thanks Robert.

Before launching the Apollo 11 mission to land the first astronauts on the moon, NASA secretly sent a fourth grader there first.
That is just one of the storylines in director Richard Linklater's new animated film, "Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Childhood," now streaming on Netflix. In the movie, Linklater transports viewers back to 1969, taking them on nostalgia-driven trip to not just see, but experience the lunar landing just as he did — coming of age while living in and around Houston, Texas.

This movie tells the story of quite a many of us cSers, the sixty-something set.
The animation renders a lot of NASA iconic photographs and movie clips in a very appealing visual style.
Jack Black, who voices older Stan, has a personal connection to NASA and the space program. His mother, Judith Love Cohen, helped develop the Abort-Guidance System which ultimately helped get Apollo 13 back to Earth.

I thought it was one of the best flashbacks to the late 60s that I have ever seen.

I loved the movie however something puzzles me. El Lago Texas is small. It’s just 0.6 sq. miles. I recently visited and it was my impression that everyone pretty much knows everyone else. Neil Armstrong, Frank Borman, Ed White and any number of other astronauts lived there. Their children would have attend Ed White Elementary School.
Stan, the boy in the movie, would’ve ridden his bike past the Armstrong house and seen all the TV reporters on the lawn during the Apollo 11 mission. He would’ve attend the same school as the children of many of the astronauts and, given his age, likely would’ve been in the same class.
Why wasn’t that included in the movie? Come to think of it if NASA had really needed to select a kid for a secret mission to the moon why not chose the son of an astronaut as opposed to the son of the guy who ran the shipping and receiving department?

Stan is intended to be representative of every kid at that time, as we see through his eyes a mixture of his daydreams and the larger-than-life reality he and everyone else lived through that summer.
Stan is also loosely based on director Richard Linklater, who didn't grow up in Houston or the surrounding suburbs, but was in Texas in the neighboring cities.
