NASA video release
Although the astronauts aboard the International Space Station are spending the holidays apart from their families, they have the holiday spirit — and more than just a few of the most important festive supplies. Commander Luca Parmitano and NASA astronauts Christina Koch, Drew Morgan and Jessica Meir share their message for the holidays wrapping up 2019.
From Expedition 61 flight engineer Jessica Meir on Twitter:
Happy Hanukkah to all those who celebrate it on Earth!

As many of you will have seen on the news, Sydney is currently ringed by the worst, most devastating bushfires seen in many decades, while hundreds of homes and other properties have been consumed by fire all over New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and South Australia. It promises to be an incredibly sad Christmas down here, with lives lost - including some gallant firefighters - and we weep for the inestimable numbers of wildlife that has had no escape from the ferocity of the flames, including our beloved, iconic koalas.
I hasten to add that where we live in suburban Sydney we are quite close to the coast and thus well away and relatively safe from the fires devastating the bush landscape to our south, west and north.
The city of Sydney has been blanketed under a thick cloud of smoke most days, but that is only of minor consideration when our daily news is filled with tragic news, with no real end in sight until we receive some torrential rain, not just to help put out the fires in inaccessible bushland, but to hopefully end the crippling drought that our rural cousins have been enduring for so long now.
Nevertheless, we live in an exceptionally beautiful country populated by some remarkably resilient people, and in the true spirit of Christmas I would like to wish Robert and all of the contributors and friends of collectSPACE a happy, safe and memorable Christmas, and here's to a wonderful 2020 (filled with rain Down Under).

That is such tragic news Colin and hopefully you will receive the rains you so desperately need soon. Here's thinking of all you in Australia and our thoughts and prayers are with you.
May I also convey my wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all our members and visitors to collectSPACE and in particular to Robert, thanking him for all his hard work in providing us with such a brilliant website.

Colin, be aware that all of us send best wishes to all in Australia, who are having to endure these nightmarish fires.
We all hope with you for nature to smile on you and send rain. Here in Britain, as elsewhere around the world, we daily see the tragedy of the situation. I was watching just a few minutes ago a video of a cyclist stopping and giving a very thirsty koala a long, long drink of water. It's so tragic to see that little fella gulping for all he's worth.
How we feel for you all, humans and animals alike. All we can do is send you our best wishes, and best hopes...

Thank you, Colin. As in any catastrophic event, true heroes emerge, and in this instance it is the courageous firefighters and volunteers who daily risk their lives to save the lives and homes of others, and have been doing this every day for several months now. Christmas Day, for them, was no exception.
The concern shown by friends and strangers around the world is truly heart-warming, and I must especially single out the many friends and colleagues within the space community. We all admire courage, daring and the spirit of doing an exceptional job, and this also lives on here every day in these amazing men and women. This Christmas will always be dedicated to them, and I'm sure those other Australians on Robert's wonderful forum will agree.
