1969 was a landmark year for American ingenuity, and coincided with the centennial of a similar achievement now less heralded, but with remarkable parallels. I refer to the completion of the transcontinental railroad in Spring 1869.It was championed and initiated by a president who was later assassinated, involved a combination of government/military and private enterprise, employed a workforce of similar size to peak Apollo program, included top U.S. engineering minds, required new and advanced technologies, captured worldwide press attention, and was an American first in the world. Can you name the astronaut who is a living link between these two enterprises? (Hint: it is based on his post-NASA career.) |
