Travel Channel's Don Wildman explores the race to the moon between the United States and the Soviet Union, meets an astronaut who actually went there and learns how close America came to coming in second in a special "Space Race" episode of Mysteries at the Museum debuting Thursday (July 12) at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

I find it interesting that the description of the show makes it sound like the United States may not have landed on the moon first even though the Soviet Union did not have a launch vehicle capable of sending cosmonauts and equipment on a lunar landing mission. The N-1 launch vehicle failed all four times a launch attempt was made, including the last attempt in November 1972 when the U.S. had already landed on the moon five times.

Thanks for the heads up on show. I enjoyed it, but like Randy, I am not sure I agree about the Russian angle. It is hard to imagine just because the head of program died, somehow the Russians then couldn't do anything right.
