This question is more about collecting astronomy stuff than spaceflight stuff but I'm hoping that you folks might still have some ideas.

I run a small space museum in New Zealand. One of my displays is an "Astronomy Wall of Fame" featuring prominent astronomers from history. I'd like to add some display cabinets featuring antique or replica items that add to the historic feel — things like an astrolabe, sextant, armillary sphere, replica of Galileo's telescope and some of his inventions, etc.

Does anyone have any ideas for things I could add to this display? Do you know of any good places to source this kind of stuff?

Contact the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum archivist for astronomy ideas. Also I'd contact "Astronomy" magazine, perhaps they would fund an exhibit with just a brief magazine endorsement on display.

The Australia Telescope National Facility (ATNF) has online resources of tools and software which are instrumental (pun intended), as well as locations of Newton, Galilean, Herschel, Magellan publications and notebooks, which may be available online to reproduce. Mini-busts of these astronomy pioneers paired with a list of their astronomical achievements, notebook(s) would prove inspirational.

You could also join Astromart. There are worldwide members that buy, sell and trade on that website through their classified ads. I have seen an astrolabe and some of the other items you mentioned for sale in the past. You will also be able to post WTB ads.

Thanks for the suggestions. I checked out Astromart.com and although I decided not to join at this stage because there's a fee, I got some good ideas and I'll definitely keep an eye on it. I may join later if I can't find everything I want.

At this stage I'm looking at buying a range of replicas by Hemisferium; they look gorgeous. I'd also love to get a decent galileo telescope replica but I haven't been able to find any leads on that one yet.

Perhaps an EC World Imports reproduction of Galileo's telescope?
