Just letting the community know about the passing of one of its members. C. Michael Wiedemann (cS: CMikeW) passed away early December 2016. Mike lived in Titusville, and prior to retirement supported the NASA Apollo program and the space shuttle program, starting off his career as an engineer and eventually moving into various management positions. He began his space career with Rockwell, and eventually retired with Rockwell. Not a bad gig.... Like most engineers, Mike was meticulous and thorough in the program(s) and operations he supported. He was highly respected by his peers, even those who didn't always see eye-to-eye or agree with his decisions, but I don't believe there is a person who knew and worked with him that wouldn't say that he always had the best interest of the program(s) at heart, and the safety of the astronauts first and foremost. He received numerous awards and citations throughout his career, and was one of those rare individuals to receive two Silver Snoopys; one for Apollo and one for space shuttle. I first met Mike four years ago on the "Estate Sale Circuit," where we would both be jockeying for position in line in the wee hours of the morning, and invariably both pursuing the same thing — "space stuff" for our collections. He and I eventually became good friends, but we still always had that competitiveness to be the one to find the "Holy Grail" to complete our collections. Did we know what that was? Not really, but like most collectors, we were always passionately in pursuit of it. (I'm sure there are a lot of you folks out there who are in total agreement!) Mike possessed an amazing amount of knowledge when it came to space hardware, documentation, processes and general memorabilia, and was always willing to "enlighten me" with info, asking nothing in return. I personally supported the space shuttle program for 32 years starting in 1979 in Operations, but you could fill a thimble with the amount of knowledge I possess about hardware, paper and processes compared to what he knew. The man was a walking space encyclopedia! Mike would read through posts on this forum and occasionally chime in with his opinion. He would never state anything unequivocally if he was not completely certain, but if he was certain about an item, a document or process, you could take it to the bank because he either personally built it, wrote or approved the paper for it or took part in the actual operations. In closing, this forum and community and the space family as a whole has lost yet another true space pioneer, and with him a vast amount of intricate U.S. manned spaceflight knowledge. His knowledge will be missed, but his friendship more so. |
