The Texas General Land Office's Save Texas History program is holding an online tournament to name the "Top Texan" from the state's past.
Who will be the Top Texan in Texas history? Sixty-four famous Texans face off against each other in the ultimate battle of Texas pride.
Apollo 7's Walt Cunningham is the only astronaut on the list.

Other figures from space history on the list include Presidents Dwight Eisenhower and Lyndon Johnson.

Here is the schedule:

  • Predictions Deadline: Tuesday, March 9 at 10 a.m.
  • Round 1: Wednesday, March 9 at 10 a.m. - Saturday, March 12
  • Round 2: Sunday, March 12 - Wednesday March 16
  • Round 3: Thursday, March 17 - Sunday, March 20
  • Round 4: Monday, March 21 - Wednesday, March 23
  • Semifinals: Thursday, March 24 - Sunday, March 27
  • Finals: Monday, March 28 - Wednesday, March 30
  • Winner Announced: Thursday, March 31

Howard Hughes, Janis Joplin, and Audie Murphy are also on the list. Surprisingly Sam Houston was not on the list.

I've been one on one alone with Walt and he shut me down few years back, so I'm not voting for him, my personal choice.

Did really think Sam Houston should have been on the list. It was "Houston" which I consider the first word spoken on the moon when Apollo 11 landed there. "Houston, Tranquility Base here, the Eagle has landed."

Not to derail, but wouldn't "contact light" count?

WeHave, what did you say to piss Walt off? Just curious.

Don't know what the rules are, but I would imagine that eligible people would have to have been born in Texas. Sam Houston was born in Virginia. Doesn't negate the great things he did in fighting for Texas, but I would think he's more of an "Honorary" Texan.

Being born in Texas doesn't seem to have been a criteria: Walt Cunningham (for example) was born in Iowa.

I think it fairly known that Walt likes to ruffle some feathers aka being politically incorrect; and I think it contributed that his NASA career ended prematurely.

It doesn't hurt to have a thick(er) skin when communicating with him. At least that's my impression of him.

Thank you for the clarification/correction Robert.

I therefore agree with WeHaveLiftoff; Sam Houston should be on the list of candidates.

Apparently, Sam Houston was added because he is now in the "Final Four" for the tournament:
Stephen F. Austin, Sam Houston, David Crockett and Juan SeguĂn are all that remain from the original 64-person bracket.

I was kind of hoping Audie Murphy would win. He was a childhood hero of mine. Then Walt Cunningham!

Seems Davy Crockett and Sam Houston will make the finals, I hope. If Houston wins I'll take part of the intellectual credit for it, haha.

Sent sts205kdr email stating nothing pissed Walt off, didn't press issue, win some lose some.

Go Sam Houston, a very smart military strategist.

SAM HOUSTON WON, HE WON, I WON, YEAH.

Can I pick 'em, even though they weren't initially on the ballot, or can I pick 'em?! Now if I could just pick a Texas-sized winning lottery number/ticket like that. At the Dairy Mart, just around the corner last week was a $500,000 winner. I wasn't there that day. Bet you can pick which winner I would have rather laid claim to...
