British astronaut's #spacerocks contest to award space patches for song titles

Can you name that tune — from space?

Astronaut Tim Peake will challenge his Twitter followers to do just that during his upcoming stay on the International Space Station.

A few times each week while he is in orbit, Peake plans to tweet lines from the lyrics of his favorite songs. The first person to reply to each tweet with the song's correct title and artist will win a special patch flown in space.

"I'm taking with me 75 of possibly the coolest patches ever flown in space, and one of them could be yours," Peake said in a statement announcing the #spacerocks contest.

Any collectSPACE members win one of the "Space Rocks" patches by being the first to answer ISS astronaut Tim Peake's song lyrics tweets?

Would be interested in buying one of these, if somehow possible.

I have won one (#50). In fact, I think I am the first American to win in it (and yes, that meant being up at 3am more than once!). It's a TOUGH contest, combining a lot of factors - knowledge, quick typing skills, and random chance.

It would be a difficult item to part with. But feel free to email me to discuss further.

What were the group/song names of your lyrics winners? Congrats to those two so far who want to keep them...

Mine (#27) was 'Nothing Ever Happens' by Scottish band Del Amitri. The lyrics Tim tweeted were "The Martians could land in the car park and no-one would care".

For whatever reason that video is not available in the USA. Congrats again, never would've got that.

Tim Peake related: Tim during a spacewalk is on the cover of the new June issue of "BBC Sky at Night."

Has anyone who "won/earned" one of these patches, received theirs yet?

It is possible the patches are still on the space station, awaiting their return to Earth with other items belonging to Peake aboard the next SpaceX Dragon launching on or about July 18 and returning to Earth in August.

The official blurb states "The patches will be sent out when they are returned from space at the end of the Principia mission." I haven't had anything in the post yet but when I won, back in March, I was told it would be "a few months" until they were sent out. I'll certainly post here when I receive it!

And the great Mr. Pearlman was spot-on! Per a tweet today via ESA Operations (‏@esaoperations):
Wondering about the #spacerocks patches? Current cargo schedule says they return on SpaceX-9, but cargo schedules can change!

Tim Peake is readying the provenance for the #SpaceRocks patches.
...we can report that Tim has completed signing your certificates for the patches. These will be mailed out with the patches as soon as they arrive.

The cool limited-edition #spacerocks patches were flown to the International Space Station in Tim's personal kit on the Cygnus launched on 6 December 2015. This means they have actually been in space longer than Tim!

Tim said: "The patches went up on the Cygnus CRS OA-4 supply flight so they were ready waiting for me to unpack them when I arrived in December."

European Space Agency (ESA) update on Twitter:
#spacerocks update: the patches have returned to Earth thanks to @SpaceX-9 but processing and shipping takes time, we will keep you updated!

From Tim Peake's Twitter:
Look what arrived in the space mail. #spacerocks patches will be headed out to the lucky winners soon!
And at ESA's Principia blog:
We will be sending them out in the next few weeks (but before the start of the next ESA astronaut mission, Thomas Pesquet's Proxima, for sure).

The #spacerocks patches have been sent out.

From ESA's Principia blog:

The spacerocks patches have been sent for shipping and are on their way to the lucky winners. The pack includes one #spacerocks patch, one Principia sticker and one signed certificate. The packaging is pretty tough, a card envelope with 4 mm card reinforcement. Envelopes are addressed with ESA labels and mailed registered post.

Here is a breakdown of the winners:
1 Belgium
2 Ireland
2 Italy
5 Spain
1 Slovenia
1 Hungary
1 Ukraine
2 Germany
1 Czech Republic
2 France
1 Qatar
2 USA
55 UK

Those five to six hours differences from Eastern and eight to nine hours from Pacific time zones made a BIG difference in availability of being awake to "win" those patches. Also, being from the same country made the biggest difference in desire to win one from their countryman.

My #spacerocks patch has finally arrived!

It's 4" and really great quality. As previously noted, it comes with a 12" x 8" certificate signed by Tim along with a Principia mission sticker.

Awesome! Been watching others get theirs on Twitter's #SpaceRocks feed.

I'll probably be one of the last to get theirs, being in the U.S. and one of the farthest from. But I know it'll be worth the wait!

EDIT: within minutes of posting the above, a large white envelope from the ESA arrived, with my patch, decal, and certificate. Huzzah!

Once again, congratulations to all the winners and what an exciting extended holiday weekend it is for them.

Though it is not the sticker but 4 of 5 of Principia patches have sold for about $20.64.

Or they can be bought direct from the manufacturer in the UK for around 1/3 of that price!

I'm pleased to see that no unscrupulous people have put their #spacerocks patch on eBay... so far!

"Unscrupulous" might be a tad harsh; it stands to reason that not everyone participating in the contest were collectors — not everyone puts the same value on flown collectibles.

They may be just as happy having played the game and won and now figure someone else would enjoy the patch more (or may need the money more than they need the patch). They won the patch, it was not a gift, so it is theirs to do with as they please.

Robert is spot-on (yet again)! While I am not parting with mine for love nor money - in fact, am gathering a few other patches related to it for a kick@$$ display - a friend I told about the contest last year also won, and she would rather see her patch go to a good home than just languish in its envelope. But, of course, she wants to be compensated for it.

So please try not to be so judgemental. Just because it isn't something you would do doesn't mean someone else is morally bankrupt. One person's treasure is another's... well, not trash... but not treasure either.

OK, perhaps unscrupulous wasn't the right word because, as you've pointed out, people have different reasons for wanting to win the patch.
