David Bowie, who performed an alien in the cult classic film "The Man Who Fell to Earth," has composed music for a new stage version in New York, AFP reports.
Based on the novel by Walter Tevis, the 1976 film starred Bowie as a humanoid who lands on Earth in search of water for his parched planet and becomes enamored with alcohol and television.

Few details were announced about the format of the stage version, but Bowie was not listed as performing.

...Bowie has long been fascinated by space and science fiction, emerging on the scene in 1969 with his astronaut anthem "Space Oddity" and later writing the probing "Life on Mars?"

According to the New York Theater Workshop, Bowie's production is titled "Lazarus" and is being directed by Ivo van Hove ("Scenes From a Marriage").
"Lazarus" features songs specially composed for this production by Mr. Bowie as well as new arrangements of previously recorded songs. "Lazarus" is inspired by the 1963 novel, "The Man Who Fell to Earth" by Walter Tevis, and centers on the character of Thomas Newton famously portrayed by Mr. Bowie in the 1976 screen adaptation directed by Nicolas Roeg.

His head remains in space:
British rock icon David Bowie on Friday took another dive into the space theme that has run throughout his career, releasing "Blackstar", the first single from his album of the same name.

A 9:59-long music video appeared on YouTube and immediately had fans heralding a return to form for the 68-year-old and the latest chapter in the story of Major Tom -- the fictional astronaut frequently referenced in his work.
