Was there ever a consideration to fly back any other rocket stages like SpaceX is doing? Other than the additional fuel requirements, could a Saturn V first stage have been re-ignited post burn-out?

A fly back space shuttle booster was on the table at one point.

No, the F-1s were not restartable.

Although not a fly back stage, crazy as it sounds, there were early plans for the SI-C stages to be recovered via parachute for reuse!

In my thesis I performed trajectory analysis for the ascent and the descent of liquid fly-back boosters, the parametrical 3D design of the vehicle, mass estimation and the performance of different types of rocket engines. I also analyzed the rocket engine thrust vectors for the LFBB from lift-off to separation from the core stage.

A chapter coped with fly back-booster studies in Europe and in the U.S. And yes, there was a study by Rockwell who wanted to invent liquid fly-back boosters for the Space Transportation System.

If you want to see more about the studies feel free to google "Liquid Fly-back Booster" and for example DLR (German Aerospace Center) or SART (Department of System Analysis).

This was a tentative design for a recoverable booster that left nothing to chance.
