While I've only been on cS a few years, it seems like the appearance (by name) list in 'Sightings' is presently huge (first time I can recall it being too big to be seen on a single screen for me) — is this a record year?

Typically, the list is longer toward the beginning of the year, simply because there is a longer lead time for the events.

The list has been a bit longer than the 89 astronauts it includes presently, but not by much (I think we've hit 125 or so in the past).

That's interesting, because it seems to me to be there are fewer astronaut appearances, given the ability to Skype and with budget concerns. Or maybe my perception is 1) fewer astronauts whom I haven't seen and/or 2)fewer active astronauts making appearances. Nyberg and Parmitano did a meet-and-greet tour, for example, as did Hopkins while I have yet to see anything about Swanson doing same aside from an appearance in Idaho and in Colorado.

I am glad to see newer astronauts doing the Encounter at KSC. Now if I only lived closer....

Active astronaut appearances generally slow down, if not all but stop, between December and February. And, unlike their retired colleagues, promotion of their appearances is generally held until just before they are set to occur.

Have there ever been former cosmonaut sightings posted on collectSPACE, in Russia, or elsewhere? Do not recall Valentina Tereshkova or Svetlana Savitskaya sightings.

There are former cosmonauts on the Sightings calendar right now (e.g. Alexei Leonov, Sergei Zaletin). Though there are no current listings, we've had entries for Valentina Tereshkova and Svetlana Savitskaya, too (pages are only created for space explorers when there is an event to list).

And though not often, we have had events in Russia. We only list events that are publicly advertised (or for which the organizers or the astronaut has asked that we add), so it is also a matter of finding the events in Russia.

Heck, sometimes they aren't even publicized at all. After I retired from the US Air Force, I worked as a civilian at Fort Sam Houston, TX for five years. Lee Archambault, I believe it was, came to the Army post for a talk once. His visit was never announced, and only appeared in the post newspaper the week AFTER it occurred.

All times are CT (US)
