I just read this Aeon interview with Elon Musk and thought it very interesting.
Elon Musk argues that we must put a million people on Mars if we are to ensure that humanity has a future.

Surprised that Musk isn't interested in populating the moon because there are three doomsday scenarios he's racing against making Mars a second home: nuclear war; a disastrous solar flare or asteroid/comet impact; and global plague.

Either way he'll be safe.

This will kill you on the moon or Mars  — unless you feel like living underground... worth the trip and the investment?

This of course is true but why Musk feels Mars is the new world for "millions" is intriguing even though it has no business case and likely suffer catastrophic failure. A fossil hunt, however, seems a good enough rationale although space robots are getting sophisticated.

There's always the possibility SpaceX could be sold or taken over in the future.

All times are CT (US)
