Ohio brewery launches 'Spacewalker' beer to honor state's astronauts

The oldest microbrewery in Ohio is tapping into the state's connection to space history to offer a "bold yet balanced" tribute to the Buckeye astronauts.

Great Lakes Brewing Company this week is launching its new Seasonal, "Spacewalker American Belgo," a Belgian-style ale.

"Perhaps one of space's great mysteries is why so many of its explorers hail from Ohio," the Cleveland beer-maker wrote in its introduction to "Spacewalker" on its label. "In honor of the 25 courageous astronauts who've called Ohio their terrestrial home, and the nine Ohio men and women who have logged hours walking in space, we present this adventurous brew."

Great Lakes Brewing Co. shared this photo on their Facebook page showing bottles of Spacewalker now available for sale in their gift shop:

They don't offer online beer sales:

Very strict laws govern the shipment of beer. As a result, GLBC is not permitted to direct ship beer from its facilities and does not provide beer for online purchase.
...but for those inclined, they do offer a Spacewalker tall tap sticker to go with their tap handle.

My local (Dayton, OH) liquor store said they were expecting some in soon. Belgian-style is my favorite, so I'll have to pick up a 6-pack and report back.

When I called Great Lakes Brewing Co. couple of weeks ago, they quoted a price for the 4-pack of $10.

I picked up a couple of 4-packs of Spacewalker yesterday from the local liquor store. They were only available in 4-packs (and presumably kegs) for about $10 each, as previously stated.

The beer is described as "belgo" and an "American Belgian-style ale." I drink a lot of Belgian and Belgian-style beers, as it's my favorite choice of brew. I was excited to try this, as I'm a fan of Great Lakes, too.

I'll say that this beer resembled no Belgian beer I've ever had. And not in a good way. It had little of the fruitiness of some Belgians and none of the honey smoothness. It wasn't even as Belgian as something like a Blue Moon. Certainly nothing like other good American Belgians such as Goose Island. This was way, way too bitter and hoppy for any kind of Belgian. Maybe you could call it a Belgian IPA since that's what it most resembled, much to my chagrin. The market is flooded with IPAs of all sorts as they're very popular with the craft beer crowd now, so maybe they're trying to cash in on that. This is a decent beer if you like that style and are expecting it, but for me, this was two thumbs down. I'll give it one more try since I have 7 bottles left, but I'll most likely save the rest for guests.

Now if you want some space-themed alcohol that's truly outstanding, pick up a bottle of Rocket Science, a red wine blend from Caldwell (not Caldwell Johnson!) Winery in Napa. Even the bottle is a cool shape. It'll set you back about $50/bottle but it's well worth it.
