Sea Launch release
Sea Launch Vessels Featured in Marvel's "Captain America: The Winter Soldier"

The Sea Launch Odyssey Launch Platform and Commander vessels based in Long Beach, Calif. were prominently featured in Marvel's Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The new blockbuster film from Marvel Studios was released nationwide on April 4, 2014.

Marvel's designers and production crew creatively re-imagined the vessels into a singular set that combined attributes from both vessels to craft The Lemurian Star. The Lemurian Star serves as the heart-pounding backdrop for the thrilling opening sequence in the film where Captain America leads fellow Avenger Black Widow and his select team of S.H.I.E.L.D. Strike Agents onto the vessel to rescue captured S.H.I.E.L.D. agents from French mercenary Batroc.

Approximately 25 Sea Launch and Energia Logistics US employees supported the one week shooting schedule including:

  • Trained 700 people for access to secure Home Port facility
  • Coordinated access to foreign flagged vessel
  • 12 hour operations for 3+ weeks
  • Staged and maintained security for 24 trailers and tents
  • Coordination between Russia, Ukraine, flag state to build sets and re-light most of the Sea Launch Commander
  • Stunt work coordination
  • Local agency coordination Port of Long Beach, Long Beach Police Department and Fire Department

Batroc the Leaper is not exactly new.
Batroc, created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, first appeared in Tales of Suspense #75 in March 1966. He has reappeared in various Marvel titles ever since.

It made me smile in view of the geopolitical situations in Africa and Eastern Europe but I guess the authors didn't see those ones coming. (And I don't like when actors speak French in US movies; and I would only watch this movie when it will be aired on TV and only because of the Black Widow. )

All times are CT (US)
