It is with sadness that I pass along word that Art LeBrun, a long-time cS member ("art540"), passed away on May 14, 2013. He was 69.

Art, whose extensive collection of early rocketry photos grew from his volunteer work scanning negatives at the San Diego Air and Space Museum, shared his passion for the early rocket launches through his posts on collectSPACE and NASASpaceflight.com, as well as contributing most of the photographs for the book, "Go for Launch: An Illustrated History of Cape Canaveral" written by Joel Powell.

The following excerpt is from an obituary shared by Art's wife on Facebook:

He trained as a photographer in the Army and, after completing his service, worked briefly as a professional photographer. He later combined his love of photography and astronomy working for Meade Telescopes for more than 30 years. Arthur was an active member of the Orange County Astronomical Society, where he served as President. He spent many happy hours in the study of astronomy and space exploration. He was a contributor for the book Go for Launch, an Illustrated History of Cape Canaveral by Joel W. Powell, contributing images for 17 chapters of the book. Many of these images came from his personal printing of negatives from the San Diego Air and Space Museum.

Arthur was also a talented painter and, in recent years, became very involved in research and collection of Panama Canal memorabilia. He was active in sports, including participating in basketball leagues in the Orange County area.

A celebration of his life will be held in Texas on what would have been his 70th birthday. He often complained of the light pollution in the Los Angeles area and traveled deep into the desert to observe the stars and planets. His ashes will be scattered in the Hill Country near his father's home where the stars always shine bright.

Very sorry to read this. Art was a great guy. I thoroughly enjoyed our e-mail and photo exchanges in recent years. I considered Art to be a real "go to" guy when it came to early Cape pad images. Art will definitely be missed.

One of Art's threads has been moved to open section of NASASpaceflight.com. There are some photographic gems from the 50's and 60's.

I believe that a good size collection of Art's scans from the San Diego Air and Space Museum's collection are presented on Flickr as part of the museum's online archive.

Incredible news. I didn't know him personally, but Art was always willing to help identify some obscure rocket photo and his knowledge on the subject was vast.

A loss to the space history community.

This is such a loss. Art sent me many photos of the early space program, primarily Atlas related images. He was so kind and helpful. I was shocked to learn he passed. What a neat guy. I will miss him.
