Two long-time members and frequent contributors to collectSPACE passed away in 2012 and we were remiss in not mentioning their loss. Steven Belasco (cS: "SRB") died on May 8, from organ failure due to an acute respiratory infection. He was 65. From his obituary, as appeared in The New York Times: Steve was an Officer and V.P. of Taxation and Global Real Estate at Colgate-Palmolive, where he worked for 33 years. A lifelong stamp enthusiast, Steve, after retirement, served for several years as Executive Director of The Philatelic Foundation and later as a Trustee. Steve also sat for 17 years on the Town of Greenburgh Zoning Board, the last 12 as chair. Steven's purchase of Buzz Aldrin's Apollo 11 toothbrush led our coverage of the results of the May 2004 Swann Galleries auction.Michael Behette (cS: "Michael") died on Sept. 17, of lung cancer. He was 55. From his obituary: Behette, a firefighter assigned to Ladder 172 in Bensonhurst until his 2002 retirement... was vacationing in Florida when he heard that the twin towers had been hit by hijacked planes. Unable to fly to New York, the Dyker Heights resident rented a car and, getting speeding tickets on his way, he drove until he reached his destination: the wrecked scene at Ground Zero. He worked 31 days afterwards, digging up and cleaning debris and continued working at the scene for six continuous months, searching desperately for his missing colleagues. Michael was known to gift the astronauts he met and collected autographs from with FDNY apparel and memorabilia. |

I'm saddened to see the loss of these two cS'ers (plus others among our community who passed in 2012). I wish the best for their friends and families. |

Mike was a good customer. He sent us his picture of himself standing in front of the 9/11 devastation. Signed it and added "Never Forget". A few days later a package arrived. In it was small block of concrete. We framed them together in a gold leaf shadowbox. We won't forget. RIP, Mike. |

This is fairly tough. I knew both Steve and Mike from my annual visits to New York during the Swann and Bonhams auctions. Steve was a private guy, but we talked every year at the auctions. I was there when he bought Aldrin's toothbrush. I saw him briefly this year, but he was gone before there was any break in the auction for a visit. I knew Mike better. He was a very friendly guy. We used to talk and compare items that we had in our collections. I still have the NYFD hat that he gave me years ago. They will both be missed. The New York auctions just won't be the same without them to talk to anymore. Rest in Peace, Steve and Mike. |

Somehow I missed this notification and, on this of all days, I was searching for Mike's email address to send him a few words. I was deeply saddened to read about his passing.Like many others, I "met" him through cS and we had some great correspondence. He told me of his involvement in the aftermath of 9/11, but didn't tell me that he was on vacation in Fla. when the towers fell. He rented a car and drove hurriedly back to NY to go to work. That's commitment. He sent me a photo of himself at the site, together with an FDNY t-shirt and cap. Thinking of you, Mike. |
