Here's an other point under research by the curator of our Cosmodome of Laval here near Montreal (http://cosmodome.org/htdocs/index.html)

As we understand, until 1988, the reentry of STS orbiters was subject to an ionization blackout between the orbiter and mission control.

We have read that, according to William Hale, flight director, since the second TDRSS is operating, there's no more blackout. On the other hand, sources mention a blackout during STS-107's reentry. What do we know about this?
