I flew into the Ontario, Calif. airport Wednesday, and while I'm waiting at baggage claim, I hear somebody behind me talking about Neil Armstrong.

Of course, this gets my attention, and I turn around. "Neil Armstrong?" I say. To which the guys reply, "Yeah, he was just here a couple of minutes ago."

"THE Neil Armstrong?"
"Yep."
"Is he still here?"

They look around, and say he must've just got his bags and left. So what do I do? I split, leaving my suitcase to rot on the belt for all I care. If I can just have the chance to at least SEE Neil Armstrong in person ... that'd be a fair trade, I think.

I go out to the curb, to see if maybe he's waiting on a cab or courtesy bus. No luck. Back inside. No luck. He's gone. I've missed my chance to see him. For the rest of the night, at the Angels-Yankees game, I'm thinking how close I'd come to at least the possibility of meeting my childhood hero.

Would I have spoken to him? Probably so. Would I have asked for an autograph? No ... well ... I don't think so. It'd been a long flight from North Carolina, and I was kinda punch-drunk tired, jet-lagged stupid, out-of-my-head crazy. Awww ... what the heck. I might've given it a shot.

He might've been punch-drunk tired, too, out-of-his-head-crazy enough to give in.

I'm in California for the Busch Series and Winston Cup races ... and hey, maybe he's heading out to the track, too. Maybe I'll bump into him. Maybe we'll strike up a conversation, become buddies and go into business together, finally marketing his signature and memorabilia at a reasonable price to discerning collectors.

And maybe I'm still punch-drunk tired, jet-lagged stupid from the flight from North Carolina.

Neil was never there... he didn't walk around at that airport... it was all done on a Hollywood back lot!

...but the real Neil Armstrong will be in Portugal in May, as will David Scott.

In telling my story to some photographers from my paper, one was quick to point out that I'd either been "one small step" or "one giant leap" behind Mr. Armstrong.

Smart-aleck photographers. You can't live with 'em and you can't shoot 'em.

Oh, and by the way, I've decided that if I DO meet Neil Armstrong this weekend at the race and go into business with him, it's going to be a non-profit. His signatures - on any kind of item, tasteful, of course - are going to be free for the asking. Just send adequate postage.

Anybody interested?

Geez ... I think I'm STILL jet-lagged stupid, and I'm heading back home tomorrow.

Neil Armstrong will be in CA again in Oct. in Bakersfield at the Bakersfield Business Convention. It's a pretty big convention but the public can buy tickets for it.

No ... no ... no ... I WISH all was right with the world and he'd sign anything for anybody, but know what? That's his choice. I guess I was just exercising a bit of wishful thinking.

I've read a couple of things lately that have said he will be making selected appearances in support of his biography slated for release in 2005. I would assume he'll be signing copies. If that's the case, count me in, at a reasonable cost.

And, by the way, I didn't see him at the race track or at the airport on my way back home. Darn. And I shaved just in case I might.

All times are CT (US)
