Friendship 7 landed off course and therefore was not picked up by the primary recovery ship, the USS Randolph. Instead, Glenn was picked up by a secondary ship, the USS Noa. Once he was aboard the Noa, Glenn got out of his spacesuit and put on a blue NASA jumpsuit and stored his spacesuit in a specially made locker designed for the suit. I was surprised by this because I would have thought only the primary recovery ship would have such conveniences (especially the spacesuit lockers). Were all of the secondary recovery ships on Mercury missions equipped with jumpsuits and spacesuit lockers for the astronauts? |

From the photos of Glenn packing his pressure suit, there doesn't appear to be anything special about the container. Can you share where you found that the locker was specially designed for the garment? |

On second glance Robert, you are right. That looks like a conventional case. | |
