Just read the transcript to an interview conducted back in 2001 with the late John Garman. He relayed an interesting story about the "AS" versus "SA" nomenclature usage during the Apollo program. I had not heard this before. He is quoted as follows: In those days it was the Saturn that was the Apollo Program. Well, no it wasn't, it was the spacecraft that was the Apollo Program. Well, let's fight about it. Well, let's call it both; let's call it the Apollo-Saturn flights. So if you were in Houston, it was AS, followed by a number, was the flight number, and if you were in Huntsville, it was SA. |

Thanks, I have always wondered about the "SA" vs "AS" issue. The inconsistency drove me nuts, but now, at least, I understand the origin. |

I always thought that "AS" was used for missions and "SA" for the launch vehicle. |

The vehicle tail number was SA and the mission number was AS. The SA usage is more prevalent since they are used for the unflown vehicles. There was no AS designation. Plus, AS-513 wasn't used as much for the Skylab workshop launch.
