Maybe a silly question here but was there ever any video footage of inside the lunar module from any of the Apollo missions?

Also, please can someone point me towards any photos from inside the LM of the lunar surface through the windows, so to speak?

Don't know about footage, but photograph-wise from the Apollo Lunar Surface Journal there are shots from the inside out from Apollo 14, i.e. shot AS14-66-9340 and AS14-66-9341.

AS14-66-9340 is a good photo of a Haselblad camera left on the surface of the moon, the topic of many comments over the years.

I'd love to be wrong about this, but I don't think any of the six landing crews shot any movie footage inside the LM on the lunar surface.

It would be wonderful, as part of the historical record, to have such footage, but I suspect all of the crews must have felt that their job was to record what was done OUTSIDE the LM.

There is another factor which is best understood by those of us "of a certain age". Before the advent of camcorders offering the luxury of 45-minute tapes, movie-cameras held only enough film for a few minutes shot at standard-speed. Anyone using a movie-camera was well aware of this time-limitation and did not "waste" film by shooting anything considered "unnecessary." This point may be particularly hard to grasp for anyone using a modern HD camcorder with a tiny SD card giving many hours of high-quality video.

Film footage of life inside the LMs after each day's activities on the lunar surface would have been most interesting but the astronauts were very exhausted after each EVA and obviously just wanted to eat and rest although some still shots were taken!

The closest you might get is footage shot from the LM 16mm DAC such as these Apollo 11 videos — 1 | 2 | 3 — and scans taken from the footage such as this of the Apollo 11 CDR.

There are a few post-EVA Apollo 17 images that may be of interest e.g. 1 | 2 | 3 | 4.

I could have sworn I had seen footage taken inside Challenger on the lunar surface but I'm beginning to think I dreamt it!

It's an interesting question though. As far as I can tell, on Apollo there were two types of motion camera? One that took video footage and seemed to be for TV transmissions back home (for example, Apollo 11 with Buzz showing "torque" with a can of spread, or Mike Collins with the water on a spoon), and a handheld "super 8" (or 16mm?) type camera, that shows silent, rather grainy footage - but I'm not sure what that particular camera was for (In the film "For All Mankind," Frank Borman can be seen filming onboard with this type of camera).

So, I think, the video camera wouldn't have been taken down to the lunar surface, nor the handheld 8/16mm camera, so that would be why there's no footage inside the LEM on the surface.

Was it Mike Collin's book, where he said they had hardly any training with the video camera, and that they taped the monitor to the camera whilst up there to try and see what they were filming?

It's from lunar orbit rather than on the lunar surface, but on Apollo 10, Cernan took some 16mm footage of himself and Stafford.

The description of this video indicates that this is "one of only two pieces of existing footage depicting a lunar module crew during flight", but I don't know what the other one is.

Thanks Burke, I'm guessing that must be the footage I'm misremembering (to the point I was "remembering" Cernan at the CDR's station ).

This 16mm Apollo 17 footage has a LM section from 38:35 to 41:22.

As an off-topic aside, there is some great deep-space EVA footage from 1:12:22.

Wonderful footage from inside the LM. Is there any audio available for that timeframe?

I thought the video with audio of Cernan and Stafford was pretty special.
