Before Apollo 1 fire, Apollo 2 and Apollo 3 missions were planned. According to Deke Slayton's autobiography "Deke!," Apollo 2 had been assigned to Jim McDivitt, Apollo 3 to Frank Borman.I'm trying to find a definitive source for command module numbers for those missions prior to Apollo 1. Were those spacecraft numbered 103 and 104? If someone has a link or source to share I would appreciate it! |

The Apollo 1 spacecraft was CSM-012. Later Block I spacecraft would follow that number pattern. I don't know off hand which number was assigned to which mission, but it likely would have been 013 and 014 for the next two missions. |

I thought so as well, but I think Block II CMs were given new numbers. The first number I can find for a Block II CM is 098. Apollo 7 being CM-101, but I don't know if this number was re-assigned after the fire. |

This probably doesn't help a great deal but CSM's 009, 011, 017 and 020 are all listed in a NASA disposal document as being launched and not recovered. CM 098 was used for pyro shock testing; 099 was a mock-up that was used for interface training; 100 was used as a training simulator in the Skylab programme. On edit - CM 014 was used for static tests on both the Apollo 'J' series of flights and also for Skylab. It was eventually scrapped.

Spacecraft CSM-014 was scheduled for Apollo 2, which was to have been flown by Schirra, Cunnigham, and Eisele. That flight was cancelled in late 1966. The new Apollo 2 crew would have been McDivitt, Scott, and Schweickart. Their flight would have been very different than the original Apollo 2 mission and would have used a block 2 CSM, but I do not recall which one. It was to have used dual Saturn IB rockets to separately launch LM-3 and the CSM. Now that I have had another minute to think about it, I seem to recall the mission would have used CSM-101 (which, of course, was later used for Apollo 7). The block 2 assigned to the Borman crew for Apollo 3 I cannot recall. It may be listed in David Shayler's book, "Apollo: The Lost and Forgotten Missions." It most assuredly would have been either CSM-103 or 104. CSM-102 was used for testing. By the way, there was no CSM-013. Some block 1 spacecraft were cancelled. Also, CM-009, 011, 017, and 020 were indeed recovered. The first two flew aboard SA-201 and 202, respectively; the latter aboard Apollo 4 and 6, respectively. Their service modules, of course, were not recoverable. |

Just for the record CM-101 was indeed used on Apollo 7; CM-103 was flown on Apollo 8; CM-104 was used on Apollo 9.CM-102 was listed in 1978 as not being a flight article and was scrapped at Downey. |
