Did Dick Gordon have a hand-held maneuvering unit (HHMU) during his Gemini 11 spacewalk?

I believe the HHMU was used on -

  • Gemini 4
  • Gemini 8 (carried onboard but not used)
  • Gemini 10
And it was not was not used on Gemini 9 or 12. Is this correct?

I believe your tally is correct, with no HHMU used on Gemini 11. (But I do not have access to my data now to confirm.)

On edit, I am re-thinking my response regarding Gemini 11. The NASA publication Summary of Gemini Extravehicular Activity has the answer. I will not be able to access my copy for a few days.

I know Cernan didn't carry one on Gemini 9. From what I've read, I believe that White and Collins were the only Gemini astronauts who used a hand held maneuvering device. Cernan probably should have had one, but I don't see a real need for Gordon or Aldrin to have one on their flights.

Edit: In my previous post, I mistakenly said that the AMU was carried on Gemini XI, and that the HHMU would have been used with it. Upon further review I can correct that and say that the HHMU was carried on Gemini XI in the adapter. It would have been powered by a supply of nitrogen gas with a connection on the outside of the adapter, as was done for Gemini X. The nitrogen supply hose was integrated with the EVA umbilical. But with the shortened EVA due to problems, the HHMU was never used on Gemini XI.

In attributing the HHMU to the AMU, I was confusing the AMU (which had fold-down control arms and thrusters) with the Extravehicular Support Package (ESP) backpack carried on Gemini VIII, which did use the HHMU.
