So, I have done some reading on the plans to refurbish Skylab early in the Shuttle program and then use it for long term crews.

Obviously, the station's orbit decayed faster than expected and the shuttle was delayed so this never happened. But, there has always been one thing I have wondered.

What would NASA have done for an escape vehicle? Would one of the shuttles simply remained on Skylab during the duration of the expedition... or would it have truly been a "shuttle" and come and go leaving a crew behind? I can't imagine NASA would have wanted to leave a crew on a space station with no means of escape in an emergency.

In a plan of reuse of Skylab space station for the 80s, I have see a shelter module in which the crew had to refuge and wait the shuttle rescue mission.

All times are CT (US)
