On this date in both 1965 and 1966, one year apart, came the Gemini launches for America's first and second spacewalks.

The first, by Ed White, was in answer to cosmonaut Alexei Leonov's walk during Voskhod 1. The second, by Gene Cernan, was more ambitious, with a planned test of an early astronaut maneuvering unit. But the walk was terminated early due to Cernan's exhaustion and helmet visor fogging over.
