I'm writing an article for the newspaper I work for, the MetroWest Daily News, about Apollo contractors in the Boston area. So far, I have found three: - David Clark Co. - Communications carrier or "Snoopy" hat,
- Natick Labs - Food, and
- MIT/Raytheon - Guidance computer and software.
An idea we have to go with the article is to try and find a photo with the three items in it, ie: an astronaut with the Snoopy cap on eating or drinking near the DSKY unit.I've gone through all of the online sources and cannot find all three together in one image. I thought that this forum may be a good place to ask as I know there are many people here who know about the photographic history of the Apollo missions. |

Don't forget Honematic Machine Corporation (fabricated some of the leg components for the Lunar Module); Wyman-Gordon (produced the Lunar Module Descent Engine (LMDE) nozzle extension under subcontract to TRW); Sprague Electric, now Allegro Microsystems manufactured a microscopically etched disc left on the lunar surface by the Apollo 11 crew - all residing in the vicinity of Worchester. In the event you don't find it sufficiently challenging to locate the first three items in a single photo, these additional will make life even more interesting for you. |

I live in the 'Boston Metro West' area. Sprague Electric and David Clark were in Worcester MA (not Worchester), about an hour west of Boston. Also the Automated Systems Division of RCA in Burlington MA (now long gone) designed/built some of the LM landing and/or rendezvous radar components with/for Grumman. I know because I worked there (for 11 years), but well after the Apollo program ended. More info on the Burlington MA RCA connection. |

Ah, my good old reliable Dave Clark headphones. I still use the set I bought when I passed my flight check in 1989. Getting that kind of use reminds me also of my 20 y/o John Deere tractor and makes me glad all over! |

I got you beat, my DC headphones are from 1974. I get razzed about getting a new pair, but I figure I'm not going to live much longer anyway. |

Getting back on topic, what about doing a montage. A combination of several photos, showing all of Mass. involvement with Apollo. |

Thanks to all of you for your responses.I've continued looking through all the Apollo photos I can find online with no luck. I should point out that I am not confining myself to Apollo 11 photos or flight photos, any photos would do. However, I am coming up dry. I will be sure to include those other companies that Scott Schneeweis suggested, but I am planning on focusing on the original three so the article doesn't get too unwieldy. I had considered RCA as Paul suggested, but I think tracking down information may be tough. Plus, they are "technically" not in the Daily News coverage area. I'll admit, I'm going for the easier stories because I will still be doing regular job as copy editor while putting this together. I think it will be an interesting piece, and will surprise some people up here who think the Apollo program just happened in Texas and Florida. The montage idea is pretty good, Lou. We may have to go with that. We were also thinking about a map of the area with callouts and photos showing the companies and their products. There's much to do, but I know I'm going to enjoy working on this article. |

Thought I would offer and update about my article. It is finished and waiting to be published tomorrow and Monday.Yep, I had so much information I had to split it into two stories, about 90-ish inches of copy. But boy was it fun. I even got to talk to Al Bean. I've talked to other astronauts for stories before, he is my first moonwalker. Very nice guy. I'll post more about that later. Right now, after processing so much information and writing the stories, I feel like I've had a brain enema, and I'm in recovery mode. I'll post links to the stories when the second story is posted on Monday. Comments will be welcome. Thanks again for your help! |

As promised, here are links to the stories I wrote for the Apollo 11 anniversary package we did at the MetroWest Daily News.I will write more here later on my interview with Al Bean, but I wanted to get these links up now. Hopefully I got the coding correct. Hope you enjoy them! - Paul Sunday's article on the Apollo guidance computer: When MetroWest went to the moon: Area companies helped Apollo 11 Monday's article on the Food and "Snoopy" cap: Menu for the moon: Natick Labs helped in development of NASA food |
