Dose anyone out there know the landing speed of Apollo 15? I have read the rate of decent under 3 parachutes was 27-32 feet per second. It depends on the scource. I have heard the rate of decent under 2 chutes was 38 FPS. I know A 15 landed with 2 1/2 chutes out. Just curious.

Lou,

I didn't find anything really definitive, but the PAO comment during splashdown (via the Apollo FLight Journal) commented that a 2-chute landing was 32fps, vs. 28fps for 3 chutes. A separate report on the couch landing attenuation system estimated that they hit with 15Gs, based on the amount of stroke shown in the shocks. Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Kevin
