Hi all, While searching for info on Max Faget I happened to come across this photo (pg 2, upper right photo) of the Mercury 7 astronauts with a Mercury space capsule in the background. Next to the Mercury capsule there is another much larger object that at first glance appears to be an [early] Apollo capsule/CM/boilerplate. Its sitting on the type of tubular support that Ive seen Apollo capsules sitting on. The captions says its a 1963 photo.1. Ive never seen it before - is it rare? 2. It has all M7 astronauts together, yet it is not one of the 'common' pics of them together. 3. Their pose looks very impromptu and with much comradere(sp?). 4. It may be a truly unique photo of the M7 astronauts together with an Apollo type capsule. Does anyone have a link to a better copy of this pic? Perhaps KC Stoever can ask Scott Carpenter if he recalls this photo. All please comment. Paul [Edited by Paul78zephyr (December 06, 2006).] |

Paul, This is my first day on CollectSPACE so forgive any redundancy. I think the capsule you are talking about was one of the early models that they built as an option for Mercury. Max was active in that. I am on this serv because I am doing my dad's biogrpahy -- my dad actually hired Max Faget at NACA and worked with him till my dad left NASA in 1970. I have a lot of info about the early models and also about what is on-line with NASA. You will need to go back to the NACA files, Wallops Island, Langley. If you want to email me directly, I can give you some additional info on Max and on the picture.Peg Purser quote: Originally posted by Paul78zephyr: Hi all, While searching for info on Max Faget I happened to come across this photo (pg 2, upper right photo) of the Mercury 7 astronauts with a Mercury space capsule in the background. Peg, I can't tell you how pleased I am to hear that you are writing such a book. I'll certainly be first in line to buy a Paul Purser biography, especially one written by a family member. I've heard he was the opposite of what many of us imagine a government bureaucrat to be - he was a guy who wanted quick, fast, effective decisions - which I imagine are going to be fascinating to read about considering what NASA decision-making he was involved in. I was sorry to hear of his passing the other year, and glad his story is being told. |

Thanks for the post and for even knowing about Paul -- he was a very silent hero of the space program. And, you are right, he was a very different type of government worker -- a true servant. I would love to know what info you have about him and who you might know that knew him. If you have any info, please email me directly so we can chat about it. Paul, Have you found out about the photo of the Apollo-like capsule? I have searched the photos I have, knowing that I have seen details about it, but haven't found what I was looking for. However, I did find another photo (S-63-9305) dated 6/28/03 that has Richard Johnston showing the Mercury space suit with a full-size model of the same white prototype to the side. It was taken at MSC (JSC). That might help you track down the capsule. If I find the picture I know I have seen, that explains the model, I will let you know.Peg Purser |
