From NBCSanDiego.com: quote: Two weeks ago, a discovery at the bottom of an old box showed, for the first time, the final and exciting moments of the [Apollo 12] mission. It came inside a 16-millimeter film reel.A film of the successful landing had unknowingly been stored away by the mission's helicopter pilot. He had no idea that he had in his possession the only copy of the landing. Once he discovered what the film contained, he immediately sent it to the USS Hornet's historian in Alameda.
See the film and read the article here.Question: How does this film differ from the recovery footage on Spacecraft Film's Apollo 12 DVD set? |

NB - if you follow the link Robert gives above, on the news page you can play the raw footage (it's pretty long and comprehensive), which makes for very interesting viewing. Watching how much the spacecraft bobs around on the waves, it does not look like a comfortable wait... even for three Navy guys. |

I don't know who wrote this story, but they obviously do not have our Apollo 12 DVD set.All of the footage is on our set, released a year and a half ago. It is also from several different cameras, so probably what he "found" was some sort of compilation that NASA printed and sent back to the NAVY for those who participated in the recovery. And it is a poor transfer that shows a good deal of pink fade. So much for "lost"... Mark [This message has been edited by spacecraft films (edited July 07, 2006).] | |
