Hi Does anybody know what ever happened to the original gantry used to launch the saturn Vs. Having just watched apollo 11(spacecraft films),i was amazed at the amount of damage on,and around the gantry.also how long did it take to prepare it for the next launch. Thanks.regards richard |

Unless there was a last minute break through in the efforts to save it I believe it was sold for scrap a few months ago http://www.collectspace.com/news/news-020404a.html#0217 Cheers, Matt ------------------ www.spaceracemuseum.com |

Indeed and sadly, Matt is correct; the surviving segments of the last Apollo Launch Umbilical Tower were demolished in March 2004 and trucked away as scrap metal (attempts to purchase such metal to mint medallions and/or collectibles were thwarted by the contractor NASA hired to haul away the LUT).[This message has been edited by Robert Pearlman (edited October 04, 2005).] |

I'd be curious to know if that contractor was aware of the value of the gantry beyond the scrap metal value. I'm wondering if perhaps that contractor made a deal with someone for select items from the gantry for later sale...or would NASA have prohibited that? |

As it was conveyed to me, the contractor was offered well over the going rate for scrap metal but still was unable to sell to any of it to a private party. My guess is that they were constrained by the same environmental concerns that led to the LUT's scrapping. |

Does this mean that the only part available at all for the public to see is the A-11 service arm located at KSCVC's Rocket Garden? |

The Apollo Saturn V Center at Kennedy Space Center has two original levels of LUT-1 restored and on display at the far side of the Saturn V (near the escape tower). The center also displays the LUT crane. |

I believe that the Kansas Cosmosphere also has one of the Apollo "White Rooms" (signed by Guenter Wendt) on display in the area next to the Apollo 13 Command Module. |
