Can anyone tell me where I can find the audio of Gus saying "How the hell can we get to the Moon if we can't talk between two buildings?"Thanks, James Marshal TV |

Not sure if you're looking for an internet sound clip for downloading or just the audio in general. For the former, I'm not sure. But you can hear it on the PBS DVD "To The Moon" (which is a nice DVD to have...a great history of Apollo that even non-space enthusiasts would enjoy). However, I'd be curious to know if longer clips of those transmissions still exist for the public to hear. I'm not sure where in the test that Grissom quote comes from, but I gather it was within a hour or two of the fire. Has NASA pretty much secured away the audio and camera footage (assuming it exists) of the moments directly before, during, and after the fire? I would assume it's pretty disturbing material that they don't want the public to hear. I suspect, for the same reasons, that's why I've never heard the onboard recording of the 51-L launch (but have seen transcripts of it). I see that Spacecraft Films has an Apollo 1 DVD set in the works. I'm wondering what footage/audio that set will contain. |

I thought the Challenger transcripts were a hoax. At least I've read that. |

This is the transcript I was referring to: http://history.nasa.gov/transcript.html Or are you referring to some other transcripts? Did someone claim there to be recordings after the explosion? |

FYI-The quote from Grissom came just a few minutes before the fire. Mark |

Sorry I wasn't more clear about my first post. What I meant to say was does anyone know where I can find the audio clip of Gus saying "How the hell can we get to the Moon if we can't talk between two buildings?". Is there anywhere on the internet I can download it or maybe someone has it in their collection? If I can find it, it will be used in a video we here at Marshall TV are producing about Wally Schirra. As Gus' back-up commander for Apollo 204, he says he told Gus to "get out of there if there were any anomalies" and that not being able to communicate very well was a BIG anomaly...well that audio clip would fit in great with Wally's sound bite... Thanks again, James Marshall TV |

I don't know if it can be found on the internet, but I am 99% sure it comes from the four-part Moonshot TV-series (as is mentioned above by John). I have it on VHS, but maybe someone can digitize it for you? The audio must come from NASA and thus can't be copyrighted.Ed Hengeveld [This message has been edited by heng44 (edited August 04, 2005).] |

Mjanovec, a few years back some sicko wrote a continued transcript of the challenger crew from the time of the breakup to the crew cabin impact. It contains all sorts of stuff like prayers and the like. I won't honour it by posting a link to it but it can be found with a bit of searching. Adam |

FYI everybody, I have found out that Gus' audio about "how can we get to the moon if we can't talk between buildings" from the TBS series "Moonshot" is actually a re-creation, although they don't label it as such. Just thought I'd let you all know. James Marshall TV |

It's on the DVD of "To The Moon" from PBS's Nova series. There's two or three statements from Grissom about communications, ending with a tired, disgusted-sounding "Jee-zus Christ" a few minutes before the fire. I'll try to copy it, but I'm sure PBS would have it. [This message has been edited by Duke Of URL (edited August 04, 2005).] |

The "Moonshot" version is indeed a recreation. Another source for the real soundbite can be also found on "SpaceFlight" narrated by Martin Sheen that came out in the mid to late 1980's. It also contains Grissom's short frustrated "sigh" and his slowly pronounced "Jesus Christ" at the end.Mark |
