Hello,Everyone knows that the Apollo 1 CM is buried in the missile silo at KSC along with the Challenger and probably the pieces of Columbia. It struck me that I've never heard anyone speak about what happened to the Apollo 1 1st, 2nd & 3rd stages. Where they ever flown on another mission? Ray |

The Saturn 1 that would have been used to boost Apollo 1 consisted of only two stages. I believe that the booster was used to launch Apollo 5 (unmanned test of the LM). |

Except... it's not. The Apollo 1 CM is stored at Langely Research Center in Hampton, Virginia. And while Challenger is entombed in two missile silos at CCAFS, Columbia - and all its 84,000 identified parts - have been meticulously photographed, indexed and archived for researchers on the 16th floor of the Vehicle Assembly Building. |

The AS-204 Saturn 1B was used to launch LM-1/Apollo 5. Incidentally, when the Apollo 1 fire happened, the Saturn 1B originally assigned to launch LM-1 - AS-206 - was being stacked at Pad 37B. Robert is correct about the CM-012 being stored at Langley. The foreword and aft heatshields were cut in two for the purpose of placing the spacecraft remains in one of the "Challenger" silos. Protests (from family members?) put a stop to the effort. I have written to the NASM to ask what happened to Apollo 1's service module; they do not know. Perhaps it was placed in an empty missle silo at the Cape, but that is just pure speculation on my part. |

The rocket on LC34 on 27 Jan 67 comprised the S-IB-204 booster stage and S-IVB-204 second stage.S-IB-204 (engines H-4058, 4062, 4060, 4061, 7062, 7063, 7064, 7065) was originally erected on pad 34 in August 1966.It was de-erected and re-erected on pad 37B in March 1967. S-IVB-204 (engine J-2025) was originally erected on pad 34 on 31 Aug 1966.It was re-erected on pad 37B on 10 April 1967. Both stages were used to launch Apollo 5 on 22 Jan 1968.

Interestingly, the vehicle stacked on the other pad at the time of the fire would eventually fly 6 years later launching the first Skylab crew. |
