having just watched from the earth to the moon,does anybody know who would of flown if harrison schmitt was not selected as the first scientist to walk on the moon,and was Dr schmitt selected just for that reason. appreciate any help on this thanks rjb |

I believe Joe Engle was to have been the original LMP on Apollo 17. Since 17 was to be the last lunar landing, NASA decided to send a geologist (Schmitt).Paul |

Schmitt was supposed to fly on 18 with Dick Gordon as the CDR and Brand (I believe, do I have that right?) as the CMP. When 18 was cancelled Schmitt was moved up and Engle was bumped from the crew. Jurg |
