I was just curious what happened to Apollo 204 after it was disassembled? If it still exists, can it be viewed? |

In the early 90s, the forward and aft heatshields were cut in half. The remains of spacecraft CM012 were to buried in the "Challenger" silo at Cape Canaveral. However, the project did not progress to that point; surviving family members of the AS-204 crew protested this action and NASA halted it. The crew compartment or the pressurized portion remains whole. Betty Grissom reportedly tried to get the spacecraft displayed at the Astronaut Hall of Fame, but the decision was made to diplay the Apollo 14 CM instead. The Apollo 1 command module, the crew's spacesuits, and I believe the BPC are still in storage at Langley. However, the dispositon of the service module remains unknown. When I inquired about its whereabouts to the NASM, they responded that they did not know what happened to it. | |
